What is Dragonsbayne?

Dragonsbayne is a Fantasy webcomic set in a world of you guessed it...dragons! The story centers around a young woman (and the friends and family she makes on the way) who discovers she’s of dragon heritage and decides to make it her mission in life to become Dragonsbayne’s very first half-dragon ambassador. Though it may not be as easy as she hopes as she has a million things standing in her way.

And who are you exactly?

That one’s easy, I’m Abi. An LGBT artist (I’m happy with She/They pronouns) almost in her 40’s from the UK who spends most of her time at home with her cats due to having a learning disability and social anxiety problems. (I very rarely leave my house other than to spend time with my family, venture up to work or if I’m feeling brave and I’m amongst friends go out on day trips with whatever friends I can rustle up.) I’m a huge movie fan and you can often find me vibing out to movie soundtracks and enthusing about musical theatre to my friends on the internet. Also currently slightly more addicted to TikTok than I care to admit.

Okay, but WHY now? I’m sure we’ve seen mention of Saft somewhere before…?

Saft actually began life as a terrible DBZ Mary-Sue who I used to RP as until I decided being a random saiyan raised by Nameks was a really silly idea and wanted her to have her own story so by then she become dun dun dun a VAMPIRE slayer because I was really into Buffy at the time or something and Capcom’s Darkstalkers so I was trying to insert her into all these random franchises but nothing felt right up until about maybe ten years ago or maybe a little earlier where it suddenly clicked I could give Saft her OWN story and her own world and so after a little bit of world building and a rewrite (OH GOD THE REWRITE) we had a very sloppy version of the Saft we have now, between then and now I met Anders and our characters Saft and Corvidan met and they had some delightful interaction with each other...we’d never even considered anything romantic happening between them because they were both so different personality wise and at the time my mindset was Saft couldn’t get involved with someone who acts so much like her Grand-Uncle.

We lost contact with each other and then somehow refound each other over on Twitter where we started conversing about Saft and Corv again and somehow 3 years ago or so we realized that these two DID work well together due to how much they both levelled each other out and this more world building and more characters were added to the world to flesh things out ad that's what we hope to share with you all! I do occasionally bring her out to roleplay with the likes of DW but it’s usually just on places like Dear Mun and some Private Storyline stuff for if there’s some kind of scenario with the Dragosnbayne cast I’m dying to visualise in my head which is just easier to roleplay out.

So what movies/stories/shows do you draw inspiration from?

I’ve always loved dinos and dragons ever since I was a kid and was always dissatisfied that any type of media with a dragon automatically had them as the villain. True these days there are many media where dragons are actually the good guys, but I’ve yet to find a series where the dragons are the main focus and not the sidekicks or main focus away from the human characters. (I love HTTYD but let’s get real here the story is mostly about Hiccup and not Toothless.) But anyway I grew up watching a WHOLE bunch of Disney/Don Bluth movies (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Tangled, Princess and The Frog and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are some of my all time favorite Disney movies) So you can probably catch little nods to them during the story in places. I’m also a little bit of a weeb, okay maybe more than that and some other influences you can probably find in the story are from the likes of shows like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Escaflowne, Wolf’s Rain, Sailor Moon, Studio Ghibli, Macross, the Fate franchise and probably much more asides.

Western Shows I really dig and draw inspiration from are My Little Pony (Reboot and the original), SheRa (Reboot/Original), Gravity Falls, Ducktales (Reboot/Original), Steven Universe, Avatar The Last Airbender, Winx Club, Other canons I may draw inspiration from? The Swan Princess, Ferngully, The Last Unicorn, E.T the Extra Terrestrial, Dragonheart, Legend (The one with Tom Cruise and Tim Curry), Labyrinth, Stardust, Xena : Warrior Princess, Tangled The Series and Buffy The Vampire Slayer

When does it update?

Currently I have no set plan, I will however do my best to keep you all updated! The best way to do this is to follow me on Twitter or even join the official Dragonsbayne Discord server which has a tonne of info about the lore of Dragonsbayne or you’re welcome to just come and chill with other fans of the series or maybe submit some fanart or fan-theories with other people there.

How can I support you guys?

We all work on various art projects asides from our webcomics to help support paying for all those annoying expenses, like rent, groceries, bills. I only work part -time due to having a learning disability which makes it super hard for me to work in over-crowded places so I get by on what I can, but commissions etc help me ALOT

What programmes are you using to make this?

I personally just FireAlpaca and PAINT.NET and just a regular XP-Pen tablet, nothing fancy because I’m not that advanced and still kind of learning even though I’ve made traditional art for years.

Bug helped build this site from all the HTML knowledge they accrued from their own webcomic DEIFY which you should check out because it’s AMAZING and has the most adorable concept of Gryphons I’ve ever seen.
